Donations to Diabetes UK in 2009

Fundraising for Diabetes UK is still a major part of our role as a group. We have begun this year by making our first donation of £3000 to a project at the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism at Oxford University led by Dr Anna Gloyn and Prof Patrik Rorsman. The researchers will study the protein PTEN, which may be important in the release of insulin in diabetes. They will also look at the PTEN gene in people with low blood glucose levels to see if they can identify faults in PTEN that may contribute to low blood glucose levels or the onset of diabetes.

In July 2009 we have been able to make two further donations. The first of these is being led by Dr Julia Lawton at the University of Edinburgh. The study looks at the issues encountered by people with type 2 diabetes who will eventually need to use insulin. The study will investigate why some participants struggle to achieve their target glucose control and the difference in control achieved by different treatment methods. Hopefully this will lead to improvements in information and support given to people with type 2 diabetes as they begin intensive insulin treatment. We have sent, via Diabetes UK a cheque for £4000 towards the cost of this research.

The second donation went to research being carried out at University College, London. This research will study the links between people with diabetes and cancer. The researchers will explore which cancers are linked to diabetes and what factors are important in predicting who is at particular risk. This project also received a cheque for £4000 from our group.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed in any way towards our fundraising efforts. Keep up the good work!
