Update August 2008 - The latest
total that we have for money collected from the sponsored walk is
now expected to exceed £1700. This includes money which we are able
to reclaim from the government by way of Gift Aid donations. A
special thanks to you if you did this when you sponsored someone -
it does make a difference!
This year's sponsored walks took place on Saturday 10th May 2008.
Although the turnout of walkers was lower than in previous years we
have so far managed to raise an excellent total of £1227. More money
is still to be collected but it does not look like we will beat our
previous year's total. Thank you to everyone who walked, or
sponsored a walker. Below is an account of the 5 mile walk written
by one of the walkers.
My name is Emily
and I am 14 years old. On Sunday the 10th of May, I did a
five mile sponsored walk to raise money for Diabetes UK. I got
involved through my godfather Tony, who has diabetes and is part of
the Aylesbury group.
So we set of on that warm Saturday
morning, leading the walk was Mike Rowe, and there were six of us
walking, trying to keep up with him.
Like I said it was a warm day, not
to hot, sometimes a bit muggy, but overall, pretty nice weather for
walking in. The fields were muddy in places, and some of the paths
had large puddles spread across them, due to a heavy thunderstorm
that hit Aylesbury and the Bucks district the previous evening. But
that didn’t bother me in the slightest; it’s all part of the fun
isn’t it?!

We started at Wilstone village
hall, walked through country lanes and through fields full of sheep
and cows.
In one field, we came across a beautiful horse that came
charging up to old Basil. We walked up a long gravel path, with
fields on either side. In one, were two very friendly horses that
liked the attention. We also came across a little church that was
over 100 years old, it was rather derelict, it had crumbled and all
that was left was the tower from it.
After our little trip down
History’s winding road, we headed back to the village hall; a rather
pleasant building, where we were served tea and cakes and other
snacks. My feet were killing me, but I had a great time and I
recommend it to everyone.
It is a great event, with great
people and it raises money for a great cause.
