Donation tins

Would you, or someone you know, be prepared to have a Diabetes UK collection tin at their place of work. We would ensure that it was regularly emptied and that your business was notified of the amount that had been collected. This is a very simple way for us to increase the amount of money we raise for  Diabetes UK and requires only a phone call to one of the committee from you. Please consider it.

2nd class stamps

One of the many ways in which people can help us is with the donation of stamp booklets. These can be used to send our newsletter to the more remote and rural members of our branch. If you prefer to download your newsletter from the website, please let us know and we will send an e-mail reminder when each edition is available. Also we are still on the lookout for willing volunteers to help in delivering our newsletters around the local area. If you or someone you know has been looking for a way to help our branch then perhaps you work or know of a company looking for a suitable local charity to sponsor or you simply have some surplus hours or 2nd class stamps please contact Basil Broom (01296 486283) or Chris Arnold (01296 613164)

SPONSORED WALK 2009 ( Latest total for 2009 walk is over £1500)

This year’s sponsored walk will take place around Waddesdon on 9th May 2009. This is a lovely place for walking so start thinking now about beginning your training! Sponsor forms will be available in the new year and once again there will be both  5 and 10 mile walks led by experienced walkers. Refreshments will be available after the walks in the village hall. If you need any further information please contact Ken Parker. News of the routes will be given as it becomes available. This is always a good fundraising activity for us so please try to support this in any way you can, either by walking yourself and getting family and friends to sponsor you: or by sponsoring someone who is walking. Sponsored Walks 2008

Update August 2008 - The latest total that we have for money collected from the sponsored walk is now expected to exceed £1700. This includes money which we are able to reclaim from the government by way of Gift Aid donations. A special thanks to you if you did this when you sponsored someone - it does make a difference!

This year's sponsored walks took place on Saturday 10th May 2008.  Although the turnout of walkers was lower than in previous years we have so far managed to raise an excellent total of £1227. More money is still to be collected but it does not look like we will beat our previous year's total. Thank you to everyone who walked, or sponsored a walker. Below is an account of the 5 mile walk written by one of the walkers.

My name is Emily and I am 14 years old. On Sunday the 10th of May, I did a five mile sponsored walk to raise money for Diabetes UK. I got involved through my godfather Tony, who has diabetes and is part of the Aylesbury group.

So we set of on that warm Saturday morning, leading the walk was Mike Rowe, and there were six of us walking, trying to keep up with him.

Like I said it was a warm day, not to hot, sometimes a bit muggy, but overall, pretty nice weather for walking in. The fields were muddy in places, and some of the paths had large puddles spread across them, due to a heavy thunderstorm that hit Aylesbury and the Bucks district the previous evening. But that didn’t bother me in the slightest; it’s all part of the fun isn’t it?!

We started at Wilstone village hall, walked through country lanes and through fields full of sheep and cows.

In one field, we came across a beautiful horse that came charging up to old Basil. We walked up a long gravel path, with fields on either side. In one, were two very friendly horses that liked the attention. We also came across a little church that was over 100 years old, it was rather derelict, it had crumbled and all that was left was the tower from it.

After our little trip down History’s winding road, we headed back to the village hall; a rather pleasant building, where we were served tea and cakes and other snacks. My feet were killing me, but I had a great time and I recommend it to everyone.

It is a great event, with great people and it raises money for a great cause.

Sponsored Walks 2007

The morning of Saturday 12th May dawned clear, but by 7.30am the rain was falling again. The ground was wet underfoot, as it had been raining for several days previously. Undeterred, a small group of dedicated people met at the village hall in Ellesborough. At 10am the first group of 14 people set off on their 10 mile walk through Askett and on to Monks Risborough where they negotiated a steep climb to find themselves looking over some stunning views at Whiteleaf Cross, before making their way back along the bottom of Coombe Hill escarpment back to the village hall. The rain had held off for most of the walk but as the last few walkers entered the village hall the heavens opened once again. This walk was planned and led by David Lipyard. The 5 mile walk set off half an hour later at 10.30 with 16 people walking, led by Mike Rowe. They headed out through the village onto fields and on towards Nash Lee and Marsh. The walk returned through Little Kimble and Ellesborough to the village hall. Waiting for the walkers at the village hall was a buffet lunch which had been prepared for them by volunteers. This was well received by both two and four legged walkers!

Total monies raised on the walk is now over £1500. Many thanks again to all who took part, donated, or helped in any way.
